Elizabet Baitakovna Tursynbayeva (born February 14, 2000) is a Kazakhstani figure skater who currently trains in Toronto, Canada. Up until 2013, she represented the Russian Federation in international competition. She is the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics bronze medalist, the 2017 Asian Winter Games bronze medalist, and a three-time Kazakhstani national champion (2015-2017).
Personal Life
Elizabet began skating when she was five years old, following her older brother Timur. Along with that, she is adept at playing the violin and piano.
After placing 13th at the 2013 Russian Junior Championships, Elizabet's family made the decision for her to represent Kazakhstan in future ISU competitions. Shortly after the switch, Russian coaches refused to work with her after claiming they only had the right to teach skaters representing Russia. As a result, Elizabet could only practice at a crowded mall shopping rink during public sessions without a coach during the 2014-15 season. Surprisingly, Elizabet medaled at every ISU competition she participated in during that time.
Meanwhile, Elizabet's mother, Pashakan, had contacted Brian Orser and sent videos of her figure skating. Orser was impressed with her skating skills and invited her to become his student. It wasn't until the spring of 2015 that Elizabet and Pashakan received a visa to move to Canada.
